The Hopkinton Center for the Arts (HCA) is pleased to announce that it will be hosting “Monsters, Memes and Momentos” in the Lotvin Family Gallery. The exhibition opens on May 28th, with a free public reception and artist talk on Saturday June 15th at 1 pm.
Joseph Fontinha’s work examines the process of representation. Particular to the nature of observation is our desire to understand things. With imagery constantly being relegated to the past, and because the next picture is always loading, Fontinha is very interested in the aesthetics of the sudden. His paintings contain marks that convey a visual level of anxiety that mimic the frenzied nature of our contemporary visual climate and offers the viewer the opportunity to detangle images. In this body of work, Fontinha is very intentional about conveying truths that he feels can only be communicated through oil paint.
Fontinha earned a BFA in Painting at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, MA, his Masters in Art Education from Boston University, MA, and MFA in visual studies from Lesley University College of Art and Design, MA, fostered Fontinha’s formal artistic education. He now teaches drawing and painting at B.M.C Durfee High School in Fall River. Fontinha has participated in juried solo exhibits and group shows through the Cambridge Art Association and Boston University. In 2017 he produced an immersive solo pop-up installation, Making a Painting, at Fountain Street Gallery, and more recently in a small group show, Wise Guise, at the Narrows Center for the Arts. He works from his studio in Lakeville, MA.
Entry to view the exhibition is always free. The HCA is pleased to offer private and group docent tours upon request. For more details, call 508-435-9222 or visit our website at www.hopartscenter.org
