Town Manager Elaine Lazarus and the Hopkinton Tax Relief Committee are encouraging homeowners who are elderly or have a disability to apply for assistance with paying their property tax bills.
Applicants must be at least 60 years old or have a state-recognized disability, and applicants must own and occupy a single-family home in Hopkinton as their primary residence. The maximum income for a household of one is $52,000, $63,000 for a household of two, $73,000 for a household of three, and $80,000 for a household of four.
The Tax Relief Fund was established in 1999, a time when Hopkinton had also experienced a sharp increase in population. The Fund is entirely community-driven. Donations from Hopkinton residents, businesses, and civic organizations are its only source of income, and no taxpayer dollars are used to provide assistance.
In the past, about two dozen low-income, senior, or disabled homeowners received aid each year. However, in 2024, the number of qualified applicants jumped 45%, and another significant jump is expected this year.
“Due to the loss of a major donor, the ability of the Tax Relief Fund to provide meaningful aid is dependent now more than ever on receiving contributions from more Hopkinton residents and businesses,” said Tax Relief Committee Chair Sue Kurys.
“Hopkinton is fortunate to have a way to provide assistance with paying property tax bills, and the need is growing,” said Town Manager Lazarus. “Hopkinton is equally fortunate to have caring and generous residents who have donated to the Tax Relief Fund. Donating to the Fund is a wonderful way to help a neighbor.”
The typical recipient has a total gross household income of just $34,000 a year and has lived in Hopkinton for about 30 years. Their property tax payments over the decades helped build our community and school system.
“In recent years, the Town has collectively decided to make significant investments in school Infrastructure,” Hopkinton Select Board Chair Brian Herr. “These important investments will put unprecedented pressure on the taxpayers of Hopkinton for several years to come. Any assistance provided by the Tax Relief Committee is welcomed news. Please support this vital initiative that makes a real difference in our neighbors’ lives.”
Hopkinton homeowners are encouraged to apply for assistance by Feb. 21, 2025.
“We want to help make the cost of homeownership in Hopkinton a little more affordable for as many of our low-income seniors and homeowners with disabilities as possible,” said Tax Relief Committee Chair Kurys.
