Boy Scout Troop 4 of Hopkinton will be providing a Christmas tree pickup and recycling service for residents of Hopkinton. The cost is $5.00 for trees under 8 feet and $10.00 for trees over 8 feet. Scouts will pick up trees on Saturday, January 8th, 15th, and 22nd.

To request a pick-up, please go to www.trees.troop4hopkinton.org or call (508) 293-6396 and leave your name, address, date for pick up, and tree height. Please make your request by Thursday of the week chosen for pick-up.

Registration for incoming kindergarten and first grade students for the 2011-2012 school year will begin next Thursday, December 30 from 9am to 2pm at Center School. A second registration day is also scheduled for Wednesday, January 4 from 1:30pm to 7:30pm.

If your child is eligible to attend kindergarten in September 2011, or if your child will be a new first grade student for September 2011, you must register your child for school.

The Board of Selectmen will meet on Wednesday, December 22 to continue its discussion regarding Legacy Farm’s request to allow the Legacy Farm Host Community Agreement’s rental housing assumptions be modified. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM and will adjourn at 7PM.

Hopkinton High School will be offering a unique opportunity to learn one of society’s critical languages through a 10 week adult Chinese course beginning in January. This course will be taught by Jiling Pan, a Chinese exchange teacher working at Hopkinton High School, and will focus on understanding and speaking basic Chinese words and phrases that would be helpful when traveling in China or building foundational knowledge of the Chinese language for future study.

Carol D. Spengler, 70, died December 18, 2010 after a six year courageous battle with Breast cancer. She was the wife of David S. Spengler, to whom she was married for 36 years. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Lois (Hollely) Dodson.

In 1895 the Hopkinton Public Libary was built with contributions from the 2,984 residents of our wonderful town. In 1967, when the town's population almost doubled to 5,569, the Library Trustees purchased the adjacent Episcopal Churc and connected the two buildings together to meet the demands of its growing community.

Today, Hopkinton's library -- only 5.015 square feet -- is among the smallest in the state, despite a population that now exceeds 15,000 residents. To meet the needs of our growing population, the Trustees have been exploring cost-efficient ways to expand.

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley along with the Attorneys General of 38 other states entered into a $21 million settlement today with The Dannon Company, Inc. (“Dannon”), to resolve allegations that Dannon made unsubstantiated and unlawful marketing claims concerning its Activia and DanActive yogurt products.
