High School Counseling Department Sponsors Financial Aid Night

The Hopkinton High School Counseling Department will host a Financial Aid Night on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 in the HHS Auditorium from 7:00-9:00 pm. Carla Berg, Associate Director of Financial Services, Bentley University will be the guest speaker. Representing MEFA (Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority), she will provide an overview of the financial aid process, including types of financial aid, how to apply, and determining financing options for your family. Parents and students are encouraged to attend together.

Selectmen to Discuss Fruit Street Parcel

The Board of Selectmen will meet on Tuesday, November 30, at 6PM to review the future of the Department of Public Works (DPW) garage in relation to the proposed elementary school at Fruit Street.

Following that, the board will go into executive session to discuss the Police Union contract. According to the agenda, the meeting is scheduled to adjourn at 7:30 PM.

Arrest Made in Break In at Cornell's

On Friday 26 November 2010 at approximately 09:10 AM, Hopkinton Police responded to the Cornell Restaurant/Pub for a reported past breaking and entry. It was determined that the suspect had gained entry to the restaurant by means of the roof. The telephone lines and electric meter had been disabled by the suspect. A safe containing the restaurant receipts had been stolen.

The investigation led by Hopkinton police officers and detectives culminated in the arrest of:

Representative Dykema Tours IntAct Labs

State Representative Carolyn Dykema and members of the Water Infrastructure Finance Commission yesterday visited the office and laboratories of IntAct Labs LLC., calling its technology platform potentially "game changing" for waste water treatment plants. The Representative met with members of IntAct Lab's team and toured the site for a first-hand look at IntAct Lab's advances in microbial fuel cell technology.

Khumalo Streamlines Town Committees

In an ongoing attempt to streamline the town's committee processes, Town Manager Norman Khumalo made several recommendations for changes to the Board of Selectemen at their November 23rd meeting. Three current committees' charges and suggestions for improvements were discussed with the board, including the Economic Development Committee, the ADA Committee and the Cable Advisory Committee.

ESL Open Mike Night December 4th

ESL’s Open Mic Night on Saturday, December 4 will feature a holiday theme, led by host Kelly Grill. Come prepared to sing your favorite holiday song!

ESL’s Open Mic will again be held at its new venue, Ciao Time Restaurant, 28 Main Street in Hopkinton, which will offer appetizers and drinks. Singers and musicians can register to perform at 7:00 p.m., and the performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 per person to listen or perform.

Daniel Patrick Hanlon, 47

Daniel Patrick Hanlon, 47, of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, passed away unexpectedly on November 20, 2010. Born in Merrillville, Indiana on February 27, 1963, Dan was the beloved son of the late Nancy and Lawrence Hanlon. Dan is survived by his wife, Maggie, their son Barrett, and their daughters Morgan and Jenna. He is the brother of Therese Handley (Marty), the late Kathy Smolen (Larry), Larry (Liz), Matt (Lisa) and Stephanie Santa (Mike) and many nieces and nephews.

Boy Scout Christmas Tree Sale Starts this Weekend

Hopkinton Boy Scout Troup 1 is selling fresh cut Christmas trees again this year. The tree lot behind Colella's Supermarket opens the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 26th at noon. The trees are traditional and fragrant select Balsam Fir and the dark greeen, sturdy-branched Fraser Fir.

The scouts will be selling trees until they are gone. Hours are listed below:

Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4PM to 8PM
Fridays from 4PM to 9PM
Saturdays from 8AM to 9PM
Sundays from 8:30AM to 6PM

Selectmen Set Budget Guidelines for FY2012

The Board of Selectmen, in consultation with Town Manager Norman Khumalo, agreed on budget guidelines for FY2012 after a lengthy discussion at their November 9th meeting. The message for FY2012 is clear; 1) level funded operational expenses at FY2011 dollars, 2) additional increases in fixed costs to be funded through the tax levy subject to the maximum levy not to exceed Prop 2.5 plus the excess levy capacity of approximately $900,000 over a two year period.

Snappy Dogs Closes for Winter

The Snappy Dogs hot dog stand, located in the parking lot of Colella's Supermarket will be closing for the winter. Saturday, November 20th will be the last day for hot dog lovers to get their fill. Owners Lisa Volpe Hachey and Teresa Boyce say they are thankful for all their loyal customers and look forward to their return again in April when they will re-open for the season.
