The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) will celebrate the military roots of long distance running while receiving the Marathon Flame from the Municipality of Marathon, Greece, during a ceremony in Hopkinton, MA, the sister-city of Marathon. The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21 outside the Hopkinton Police Department on 74 Main Street. The public is invited to attend.

Eric Sonnett, Ron Clark and Ken Weismantel, former members of the Board of Public Works, reviewed and presented their accomplishments to the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday night. Elected in May, at the same time that Town Meeting voted to disband the committee, the three men served a total of three months on the board and met a total of seven times.
Five Hopkinton Girl Scouts have achieved something that few scouts have the chance to do; they have created an earned patch entitled “Go the Distance” that has been approved and made official by the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Massachusetts (GSEM). Now, due to the hard work of Amanda Rogers, Emma Galeucia, Sara Freedman, Avery McKenna and Chloe Smith, Junior, Cadette, Senior and Ambassador level scouts worldwide will be able to earn a patch based on criteria developed right here in Hopkinton.
Hopkinton High School is proud to announce that 15 students have been named Commended Students in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are Ryan Ashley, Peter Bransfield, Katherine Covino, Christopher Fowler, Joseph Fujiyoshi, Kelsey Jones, Christopher McCain, Kenneth Payson, Catherine Phelan, Christopher Rogers, Justin Roshak, Kelly Ryan, Allison Toth and Brienna Vos.

On Saturday, October 2nd the beFREE! Project, a program of the Hopkinton Youth Commission, held a Fall Jam at the YMCA in Hopkinton. The youth members, led by HHS senior Mary Kate Shanahan, organized this supervised outdoor concert for their peers. There were about 300 high school students in attendance who enjoyed the musical performances from 25 of their classmates. In addition to the music, there was a bonfire to keep warm and to toast marshmallows. This is one of a series of events sponsored by the beFREE!
