On Saturday April 9th the Boy Scouts from Troop 4 will hold its 2nd Annual Pancake Breakfast. Breakfast will be served by the scouts from 7:30 am until 11:30 am inside the St. John the Evangelist Church Hall at 20 Church Street in Hopkinton. The boys will prepare original and chocolate chip pancakes, sausages, juice, coffee and more. Last year over 400 people attended the Pancake Breakfast and we are hoping to have over 600 guests attend in 2011.

The scouts will also hold a silent auction and visitors can look at and bid on a variety of items. Donations to this year’s silent auction have been numerous and include a Golf Foursome at the Hopkinton Country Club, a Gold Boating Membership at Outdoor Recreation Hopkinton, Local Restaurant and Hair Salon Gift Certificates. If you would like to make a donation to the silent auction or to Troop 4 call the hotline number below. The Admission price of $5 gets you in for both the silent auction and all the pancakes you can eat. We have discounted pricing of $3 for senior citizens, and veterans eat free!

We set up the St. John’s hall in red, white and blue to honor our veterans for Patriots Day and to kick off Marathon Week in Hopkinton.

All proceeds from the Pancake Breakfast and Silent Auction go to Troop 4 scouting programs. Last year we traveled with 44 scouts and leaders to Baxter State Park in Maine. Half the boys climbed 12 hours up and down Mt. Katahdin and across Knifes Edge. Knife’s edge is a narrow trail that runs over a mile long with steep cliffs on both sides. This was a challenging climb for even the hardiest of climbers and everyone returned safely as nightfall was setting in. All the boys had the chance to venture down the Penobscot River on rafts to tackle level 4 and 5 white water rapids. Several scouts and adults took an early morning trek by pontoon boat to see a mother and baby moose along the shoreline of a huge lake deep in the woods of Maine.

This year the boys wanted to enjoy the ocean and have a Seabase Adventure. Troop 4 is planning to travel to Nantucket by ferry in early September and have a Seabase Camping adventure with deep sea fishing, seal sighting, and sailing around the island. Each boy is trying to sell at least 20 tickets to the Pancake Breakfast to help earn money to subsidize the cost of the trip. Last year we had one scout sell over 200 tickets. It is amazing what the boys can do when you lay out a challenge for them.

It is programs like these that provide the youth of Hopkinton with a quality scouting experience. All scouts are given the opportunity to take on leadership roles in the troop and on camping adventures, which helps them build the skills they will need to become strong leaders in our community and for our country.

Please join us and support your local Scouting program. The hotline numbers for tickets are (508) 293-6396 and (508) 435-1030.
