In a press release today, the MetroWest Anti-Casino Coalition said that Milford's overwhelming stand against the casino is yet another data point for Beacon Hill to consider and called on Governor Deval Patrick and the state Legislature to acknowledge that it might now be time to re-think the future of casino gambling in Massachusetts.
“Following the lead of the Milford voters who approached this important and life altering decision with patience, wisdom and fortitude, the MetroWest Anti-Casino Coalition (MWACC), a blueprint for regional cooperation, will soon disband having served its member communities as charged. It is our hope that the leaders of the Commonwealth, who created the challenges that gaming will present to our state, will take this opportunity to re-think the perceived benefits this flawed legislation offers to communities,' said Chairman Brian Herr, in a press release after the Milford referendum.
With voter turnout reported at 57%, Milford voters defeated the proposal by Crossroads, LLC for a casino in Milford by a 2 to 1 margin - with a final vote count of 6,361 to 3,480.
“At MWACC we are honored and humbled by the hard work of so many in Milford," said Herr. "Massachusetts is a great place to live, to learn, to work and to raise a family. Let’s focus on a brighter, less predatory future!”
