Three of the 8 teams left in the MIAA Division 2 Baseball State tournament bracket are TVL Large teams! On Tuesday (6/4) #10 seeded Norwood captured a Round of 16 upset 1 to 0 win over #7 Somerset-Berkley, on Wednesday (6/5), #6 seeded Hopkinton took down #11 Dartmouth 2 to 0 and #9 Westwood got the upset road-win over #8 Algonquin, 6 to 3.
In the Norwood win over Somerset-Berkley, Zach Badger pitched an absolute GEM, complete-game shutout, giving up 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3 to lead Norwood in the second round victory over Somerset-Berkley. The only run came in the top of the 1st inning when Jacob Sheehan hit a sacrifice groundout to score Sam Larkee.
Norwood is now 14 and 8 overall and will next head to #2 Plymouth North (19-3) in the Round of 8 on Friday, June 7th at 4:30pm.
#6 Seeded Hopkinton also got a complete-game shutout performance from Matt Gaughan as he pitched the full 7 innings giving up 3 hits, 0 runs, walking 2 and striking out 1 to help defeat #11 seeded Dartmouth 2 to 0. Gaughan's ERA for the season is an insane 0.76!
The Hillers struck for a run in the 1st inning after a Nick Pedroli triple allowed Charlie Petruney to earn a sacrifice RBI and in the 4th inning, Derek Hatherley singled and would steal 2nd and 3rd which led to a score on a passed ball.
The Hillers are now 19 and 4 overall and will next head to Western, MA where they will battle #3 Westfield (19-2) on Sunday, June 9th at 1pm.
The #9 seeded Westwood Wolverines bats struck Algonquin on Tuesday, June 4th and they were able to capture an upset 6-3 win over #8 seeded Algonquin to advance to the Round of 8.
