Francis X. (Jerry) Bowker, 87

Francis X. (Jerry) Bowker, 87, died suddenly at his home on September 14, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sarah (Riordan) Bowker. Born in Hopkinton, he was the son of the late Clifton and Gertrude (Ryan) Bowker.

Jerry was a staff sergeant and interpreter in World War II and was a member of the Army intelligence group, the Alsos Mission, which branched off from the Manhattan Project to investigate and seize German nuclear resources and personnel. He served as chief of police in Hopkinton for 31 years.

National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists Named

Five students from Hopkinton High School are among the approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 56th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. They are Christopher Daniels, Stephanie Hadley, Elise LeCrone, Paige Phelan and Matthew Szczepankiewicz.

According to the announcement from the high school, these academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 84,00 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $36 million, that will be offered next spring.

Hitchings Hardware Closes it Doors on September 15

Since 1961 Hitchings Hardware has been a constant presence in downtown Hopkinton, providing its customers with basic hardware items with a focus on personalized customer service. The store has been a continuously operating hardware store since the early to mid 1800’s. All of that will come to an end on Wednesday, September 15 when its doors close for good.

Herr Loses 3rd District to Lamb

Although it was close in the early part of the evening and again later in the night as the final results came in, Brian Herr, former chairman of the Board of Selectmen, was not able to edge out Holliston real estate attorney Marty Lamb in the Republican race for representative in the 3rd Congressional District.

Evan Nicholas Girardi, 20

Evan Nicholas Girardi, 20, passed away unexpectedly on September 6, 2010. Born in Mission Hills, California, he was the beloved son of Michael Daniel Girardi and Barbara (Rollinson) Girardi of Hopkinton.

Evan was a 2007 graduate of Hopkinton High School and a senior at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore, studying Business with a concentration in Marketing. He held past summer internships at EMC Corporation in Hopkinton.

Meet Your Neighbor - Leah Raczynski

Hopkinton High School freshman Leah Raczynski was recently recommended by a school guidance counselor to be a participant in an interview for Meet Your Neighbor. Raczynski had been interviewed back in the winter by a Hopkinton Crier reporter before embarking on a distant trip to India with the Mission of Peace Youth Organization. Six months later, when asked to meet to talk about her trip and her life, Raczynski suggested meeting at one of her favorite Hopkinton locations, Lake Whitehall. The interview took place on a warm, sunny day back in June.

First Annual Hiller’s Golf Tournament a Success

The first annual Hopkinton Hiller’s Golf Tournament held on Monday, August 30 was a success, with a total of 100 players teeing off at Shining Rock Country Club in Northbridge. According to Head Coach Dick Bliss, over twenty-five parents, former players and businesses supported the high school golf team by sponsoring a hole.

“We raffled off over 30 really wonderful raffle prizes after our great barbecue dinner under the tent,” said Bliss.
