State Health Officials Announce Season’s First Human Case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) today announced the first human case of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in Massachusetts this year. The person is a male in his 80s who was exposed in Worcester County. As a result, the risk level in the communities of Douglas, Oxford, Sutton, and Webster has been raised to critical, and in Dudley, Northbridge, and Uxbridge the risk is increased to high.

The neighboring communities of Auburn, Charlton, Grafton, Leicester, Mendon, Millbury, Millville, Southbridge, and Upton are now considered at moderate risk.

Hopkinton Garden Club Announces 2024 Scholarship Winners

Hopkinton Garden Club is pleased to announce that James Kayan and Lucas Coffman have been selected as recipients of 2024 Hopkinton Garden Club Scholarships. James and Lucas were each awarded a $1500 scholarship at the Hopkinton High School Awards Ceremony in June.

In the fall, James will be attending the University of Maine to pursue a degree in Forestry, while Lucas will be attending the University of Miami to pursue a degree in Marine Science and Biology.

Hopkinton Health Dept: Mosquito Advisory - West Nile Virus Positive Mosquitoes in Adjacent Communities August 14 2024

On August 14, 2024, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported that mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus had been identified in mosquito pools within Southborough, Northborough, Westborough, Bellingham, Dover, Medfield, Framingham, Natick, Clinton, Marlborough and Worcester. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Hopkinton Health Department encourage residents to utilize EPA approved mosquito repellents and avoid being outdoors during peak mosquito activity at dusk and dawn.
